The Cessna 208 Caravan is a high wing, braced cabin monoplane, powered by a single Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprop in tractor configuration. It has a fixed tricycle landing gear but can also be fitted with floats and skis, and can be operated for skydiving with the left side cargo hatch converted to a roll up door.
Designed in the early 1980s, the prototype took its first flight on 9 December, 1982 and FAA certification was granted in October 1984. The amphibious version, with Wipline Model 8000 floats, was type approved on 26 March, 1986.
The first 208 Caravan was produced in 1985. It had a PT6A-114 turboprop engine and seating for up to nine passengers. It was replaced in 1990 by the 208B Caravan 675, a higher powered aircraft thanks to the 675 shp PT6A-114A engine.
The 208A Cargomaster and the stretched 208B Super Cargomaster were designed for US freight company FedEx. The Super Cargomaster was certified on 9 October, 1986 and first flew in 1986. It features a greater payload capacity, including an under fuselage cargo pannier, and no cabin windows.
The 208B Grand Caravan first flew in 1990 and is a stretched variant powered by the same PT6A-114A engines. The 11 seater aircraft was certified on 13 December, 1989
December 2012 saw the FAA grant certification for the upgraded 208B Grand Caravan EX with its more powerful 867 shp engine.
On 28 May, 2020 an all electric powered Cessna 208B Grand Caravan made its maiden flight from Moses Lake runway in Washington, US. Power was generated by a 750 hp Magnix Magni500.
Includes 208 Caravan I and 208A Cargomaster, and stretched 208B Grand Caravan, Grand Caravan EX and Super Cargomaster
