Overview

The AW139 is a 15 seat, medium-sized twin engine helicopter that supports VIP/corporate transport, offshore transport, fire fighting, law enforcement, search and rescue, emergency medical service, disaster relief and maritime patrol missions.

The AW139 was originally designed jointly by Italy-based helicopter manufacturer Agusta and US manufacturer Bell Helicopters and marketed as the Agusta-Bell AB139. It was redesignated as the AW139 after Bell withdrew from the project in 2005.

The helicopter is manufactured in Italy and the United States, and also by Poland-based subsidiary PZL-Świdnik and HeliVert, a 2012 joint venture between AgustaWestland and Russian Helicopters with a production line inside Russia.

The maiden flight of the first pre-production helicopter took place on 3 February, 2001 at Vergiate, Italy. That of the first production unit came on 24 June, 2002 and it entered service in 2003. Italian certification was received in June 2003 and the FAA type certificate followed in December 2004.

The AW139 has a five-bladed fully articulated main rotor with a titanium hub and composite blades plus a four-bladed articulated tail rotor. It is powered by two FADEC-controlled P&WC PT6C turboshaft engines and has retractable tricycle landing gear.

Easy access to critical systems facilitates maintenance. Many components have been designed for an extended lifecycle and, where possible, the number of parts has been reduced. It is equipped with a Health and Usage Monitoring System.

In 2008, AgustaWestland certified an increase in the AW139 max gross weight to 14,991 lb to better compete in long-range markets. In 2015 this was increased to 15,432 lbs.
