BAN's World Gazetteer
Republic of IrelandUniversal Aviation has completed the staffing of its new Dublin office and has geared up early for the challenge of the 2006 Ryder Cup. Brendan O'Grady, manager, Universal Ireland, says: "We opened in Dublin in April and have staffed up our full permanent team but Universal staff will be seconded in from other offices as needed to service all our clients for the big event." The more usual total of around 100 weekly private flights through Dublin is expected to at least double as enthusiasts flock in for the Ryder Cup being held at the K Club in Straffran, County Kildare, between September 22 and 26. Private aircraft owners are expected to take time off in Ireland before and after the tournament. O'Grady warned: "Because of the Ryder Cup's immense popularity, many operational issues must be addressed immediately for all travel to Ireland during the dates of this event.. Slots in Dublin are limited and filling rapidly." He advises clients to look at competitive parking and handling rates in Shannon which is a 20-minute flight from Dublin. Hotel accommodation in the Dublin area will be scarce and extremely expensive, he warns. Universal set up in Shannon three years ago and opened in Dublin in April. O'Grady says that there are no immediate plans to add to the two offices, staffed by around 20 full-timers.
