Having operated a Bell 206 JetRanger for 22 years, Eagle Helicopters has selected a LongRanger as its successor. The company acquired the aircraft in August and it became operational in January, 2006
"It's the most efficient small single engine helicopter that money can buy," said Martin Burgin, chief pilot and md of Eagle Helicopters. "It's a very smooth helicopter, is quicker and has 50 per cent more seats, so it really does make a difference."
Burgin also believes that the LongRanger is cost-effective: "Typically it will fly at about #600 an hour, so at #100 per seat doing 115 knots, it is quite economical".
The helicopter is based at Newcastle City Heliport, which the company owns, and is expected to turn in around 300 hours per year.
Other than the LongRanger, Eagle Helicopters operates an Agusta A109 - also a six seater - making the two aircraft interchangeable in terms of business charters. "The A109 is as quick as money can buy. It's an elegant, quiet, comfortable, fast twin, and operates day and night," said Burgin.
Other than chartering, the company uses its aircraft for aerial work in the winter in support of the local electricity companies.
Eagle helicopters also sells helicopter fuel and offers pilot provision and management. The company has performed stunt flying for television commercials, including a high profile campaign for Barratt Developments.
The company has no immediate fleet expansion plans, though a new addition to the fleet would most likely be a Sikorsky S-76 on behalf of a private company.
