London Biggin Hill airport in the UK has seen substantial advancements in recent years, with continued investments in infrastructure driving both economic and operational success. These efforts have solidified its position as a major hub for aviation, innovation and technology.

Airport commercial director Robert Walters says: “An important milestone for the airport came in 2011, when it was acknowledged by the mayor of London as a strategic route in and out of the City and designated as a key development centre. This recognition helped us foster a successful collaboration with the local community and authorities, leading to the extension of our operating hours in 2017 and a notable increase in business activity.”

London Biggin Hill, Farnborough and Luton airports together account for 75-80 per cent of all business aviation traffic in London. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic, London Biggin Hill demonstrated its resilience, remaining profitable and continuing operations without closure.

“Post-pandemic, the airport marked a major achievement with the completion of Bombardier's new European service centre in March 2022, delivered on time and within budget. Additionally, we are nearing completion of a comprehensive refurbishment to the airport's taxiways, improving circulation to accommodate larger business jets. These developments reflect our focus on sustaining operational reliability while anticipating the needs of the future.

“Our four-star onsite hotel, The Landing, has also been a remarkable success. Since opening 16 months ago, it has consistently maintained occupancy rates between 80 and 90 per cent, proving to be an asset for pilots, crew and resident businesses, and a popular dining spot for local residents.”

A recent economic report revealed the potential for London Biggin Hill airport to contribute £636 million GVA annually to the UK economy and support up to 7,649 jobs nationally. Walters highlights several exciting developments to support this ambition.

“We are in the process of launching a new Instrument Runway Visual Range (IRVR) system, significantly enhancing low-visibility runway performance. This will be complemented by the introduction of a 24-hour METAR service, providing weather updates every half hour to ensure accurate information for crew flying overnight, from regions such as America.”

The airport is also investing in aerial infrastructure that will further elevate London Biggin Hill's operational capabilities and keep it at the forefront of the business aviation sector. Its ability to adapt and listen to the needs of stakeholders has been a key factor in the airport's achievements.

Walters continues: “We've just signed off on our 2025 runway resurfacing project, which will take place at night, so there will be no operational disruption. Part of this project includes all-new LED lighting and centreline lighting. This will greatly improve low visibility procedures.”

Additionally, London Biggin Hill continues to develop its real estate potential. “We have ample space and are open to offering hangarage to third-party developers, creating new opportunities,” says Walters. “Our enhancements to infrastructure and operational developments have also attracted significant interest from OEMs, which is a testament to the airport's value and strategic location, just 12 miles from the Prime Meridian.

“As we move forward, our goal remains to offer unparalleled service, discretion and support to the business aviation market, while continuing to strengthen our relationship with the community and provide educational opportunities for the next generation of industry professionals.”
