CaliforniaThree Avfuel-branded FBOs and one World Fuel Services FBO in close proximity to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California had SAF on hand for Super Bowl in February: Million Air Burbank; ACI Jet-Orange County North; Castle & Cooke Aviation at Van Nuys airport; and Ross Aviation at Long Beach airport.
Avfue keeps consistent inventory of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel at Million Air Burbank, a carbon-neutral facility, and at ACI Jet-Orange County North, and provided Castle & Cooke Aviation’s Van Nuys location with a truckload of approximately 8,000 gallons specifically for the event.
Altogether Avfuel anticipated it would deliver seven truckloads, approximately 56,000 gallons, of SAF between the three locations, although additional loads would be available based upon demand.
Castle & Cooke president of aviation operations Tony Marlow says: “We were Avfuel's first FBO to receive a demonstrative load of SAF back in 2019, and we couldn't be more proud to offer it yet again to our eco-conscious customers flying in for the event.”
Seven truckloads of SAF would provide a 133 metric ton reduction in carbon emissions over the fuel’s lifecycle. This provides the same climate benefit as reducing the emissions from 28.9 passenger vehicles to zero over the course of a year. In future, SAF could deliver up to 80 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions over its lifecycle versus traditional jet fuel if used in its neat, concentrated form.
“We are proud to collaborate with our branded FBO partners and Neste to provide operators with accessible options for fuelling with SAF during one of the year’s largest events," says Avfuel manager of alternative fuels Keith Sawyer. "The emissions reductions SAF provides are real and immediate, and will help sustainably-minded operators fuel up in a way that aligns with their corporate social responsibility goals.”
World Fuel supplied about 15,000 gallons of blended SAF to Ross Aviation's Long Beach location from its provider, World Energy.
Ross general manager Greg McQueary adds: “Being able to offer SAF to customers' aircraft while they're with us only adds to the positive impact we're bringing to the experience.”
The fuel is drop-in capable and was stored on-site at the FBO's fuel farm. It is a blend of 30 per cent neat SAF and 70 per cent conventional jet fuel. Neat SAF is a 100 per cent sustainable fuel made entirely of renewable resources and contains no fossil fuel. It is not co-processed with fossil fuel in traditional oil refineries, and its carbon attributes comply with all state and US federal regulations for advanced biofuels.
