Yamal Airlines has taken delivery of two Mi-8MTV-1 helicopters manufactured by Russian Helicopters' Kazan Helicopter Plant. The rotorcraft are designed to carry out missions in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in the Arctic Circle, and will be based in Salekhard.

The Mi-8MTV-1 helicopters will transport goods and passengers, and are equipped with two gas-turbine domestic TV3-117VM engines and a VR-14 main gearbox. The power of each engine is 2,200 hp. The helicopters are equipped with APUs to provide an emergency source of electricity in the event of a generator failure.

Each aircraft is equipped with an external cable suspension on which it is possible to carry cargo up to a maximum weight of four tons depending on the flight range, the height of landing sites above sea level and air temperature. Preparation is under way to install an onboard boom with a winch, which will enable rescue operations. Sites for additional fuel tanks have also been prepared.

It is not the first time that Yamal Airlines has been a customer of Russian Helicopters; two Mi-8MTV-1s were handed over at the end of 2019.

Yamal Airlines provides services to enterprises and organisations in the oil and gas sector, as well as engaging in regular passenger transportation to villages within the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. There are more than 55 aircraft in the airline's fleet, most of which are modifications of the Mi-8 helicopter.
