South African fixed-wing air ambulance provider Universal Air Evac has expanded its capabilities in Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic by acquiring a portable negative pressure isolation unit. The unit allows the operator to transport infectious patients while maintaining the safety of its crew, providers and patients. It allows for the rapid set-up of an area biologically isolated from the environment outside of the chamber, so that the crew can continue providing emergency medical transport while maintaining maximum protection.

Other measures implemented to ensure the highest levels of safety include comprehensive screening and ongoing monitoring of all crew members; quarantining of crew between duty periods; pre-flight patient screening and assessment before departure from home base; and vapourised disinfection of aircraft interiors and equipment in addition to standard cleaning procedures.

Medical evacuation of patients across borders has become complicated due to restrictions imposed by governments in their fight against COVID-19. Universal Air Evac is available to assist with these movements and help clients navigate the challenges of moving patients or insured individuals to an upgraded level of care.
