Overview

The single engine, light utility H130 (previously known as the EC130) was developed from the Eurocopter AS350 Écureuil between 1999 to 2012. Major changes from the preceding AS350 included the adoption of a dual-hydraulic system, an enclosed Fenestron anti-torque device, and a wide main body to provide for a cabin with considerably greater internal space. The EC130 was designed in close cooperation with tour operators who were looking for a spacious cabin and excellent external visibility.

A first prototype performed its maiden flight on 24 June, 1999. A a second prototype assisted in 200 hours of test programmes, including high altitude testing in New Mexico in September 2000. JAA certification was achieved on 14 December, 2000 and FAA certification on 21 December, 2000. It was handed over to the first customer, a US-based tour operator, in February 2001.

An improved version featuring FADEC-equipped Safran Arriel 2D turboshaft engines, an active vibration control system and better air conditioning systems, the EC130 T2, was unveiled at Heli-Expo in Texas on 12 February, 2012. EASA certification came on 25 May, 2012, at which time Eurocopter was test flying its first production aircraft with two more units under construction. FAA certification was granted in July 2012 and the first delivery was made to Nevada in October 2012.

In August 2013, Airbus Helicopter's Brazilian subsidiary Helibras assembled its first EC130 T2, and the first Australian-assembled EC130 T2 followed in December 2013.

There are three prime seating configurations; a standard layout with a single pilot and six passengers, a similar arrangement with the two central seats facing aft, and a high density layout with three front passengers seats in line with the pilot. It can be quickly configured between passenger and freight configurations, and various interior configurations have been developed for EMS roles with optional equipment for law enforcement roles.

It was renamed H130 around March 2015 after Airbus Helicopters’ acquisition of Eurocopter.
