In the late 1960s, French manufacturers Sud Aviation and Nord Aviation jointly undertook to design a combined liaison/trainer aircraft equipped with twin turbofans in response to an open request from the French government - initially designated the SN600 Diplomate. The two companies merged during 1970 to form Aerospatiale.
The prototype SN600 performed its maiden flight on 16 July, 1970, powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-1 turbofan engines. A second, stretched prototype, the SN601, featured 2,500 lbf JT15D-4 engines and flew for the first time on 20 December, 1972. The aircraft was renamed the Corvette and was awarded an airworthiness certificate by the French authorities in May 1974.
The Corvette was designed to fulfil a variety of roles including commuter airliner, aerial photography, airline pilot training, air ambulance, air taxi, express freight and navigation aid calibration work. There was seating for between six and 14 passengers.
AĆ©rospatiale ceased manufacture of the Corvette during late 1976. One prototype SN600 and 39 production SN601s had been built.
