The Piper PA-31T Cheyenne is a turboprop development of earlier Navajo and Chieftain piston twins. Design work commenced in the mid 1960s, and the Cheyenne prototype first flew on 29 August, 1969. Piper then had to redesign the flight controls to handle the increased loads on the airframe generated by higher speeds. Certification was granted on 3 May, 1972.
The initial production version PA-31T Cheyenne is equipped with two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-28 turboprop engines driving three blade constant speed Hartzell propellers. It first flew on 22 October, 1973 and can seat up to six passengers with a crew of two.
In 1978 Piper introduced the slower and cheaper PT-31T Cheyenne I, with 500 shp Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-II turboprop engines. At the same time the company renamed the original model the PA-31T Cheyenne II. In 1983 the Cheyenne I was given more power at altitude, revised cowlings and interior, and was known as the Cheyenne IA.
The PA-31T2 Cheyenne IIXL is a stretched version introduced in 1979. powered by two 750 shp Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-135 turboprops.
